Diabetic Retinopathy
Definition / Overview
Microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus affecting the retina. The leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. Classified as non-proliferative (NPDR) and proliferative (PDR). Mentioned in the RAM article as a secondary cause of macroaneurysm and a differential diagnosis.
Key Details
- Details to be added from dedicated source â NPDR staging (mild/moderate/severe, 4-2-1 rule), PDR, DME, management, landmark trials (ETDRS, DRS, DRCR.net protocols)
- Diabetic retinopathy can cause secondary retinal-arterial-macroaneurysm formation
Clinical Relevance
When evaluating a patient with RAM, diabetic retinopathy must be considered as a potential underlying cause alongside branch-retinal-vein-occlusion and radiation-retinopathy.
Associations
- retinal-arterial-macroaneurysm â secondary cause
- bevacizumab / ranibizumab â treatment for DME and PDR
Sources
- macroaneurysm-eyewiki (brief mention as secondary cause/differential)
Gap: Major stub page. Diabetic retinopathy is a cornerstone of retina practice and needs comprehensive sourcing â ETDRS, DRS, DRCR.net Protocol I/T/S, classification, screening, management algorithms.
